The curvy accomplishment sitting before you is the newly-unveiled Ferrari 458 Italia, which will replace the F430. While the car won’t be shown in public until the Frankfort Motor Show in September, Ferrari has released the details and given us an intimate glimpse of what to expect with these stunning renderings. “Designed for owners for whom the priority is uncompromising on-road performance with occasional track day capability, but who still demand a car that is useable in day-to-day driving”, the 458 Italia features a direct-injected, mid-rear V8 good for 562 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed dual clutch gearbox provides seamless shifting and control while a steering wheel with integrated controls keeps nearly every necessary adjustment at the driver’s fingertips. The 458 tops out at 9000 rpm and Ferrari redesigned the gear ratio so that 80% of its torque is available at the low 3250 rpm. The powertrain combines with the compact, aerodynamic shape and lightweight aluminum structure to provide a 0 to 62 time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 202 MPH.

Count the announcement of Kodak’s Zi8 ultra-compact hi-def camcorder (above) as the latest salvo in the burgeoning Flip-killer market. But while Flip just keeps making subtle design refinements in its 720p models, Kodak and everyone else—mainly Sony, Sanyo, RCA, and Creative—are plotting victory by way of increased resolution and strategic feature add-ons. In the case of the Zi8, that means 1080p video, image stabilization, improved low-light shooting, YouTube and Facebook uploading, and…a microphone ja ck. That said, the virtue of this style of camcorder is the relative lack of buttons, not the lack of features, and at this price, we’re not complaining. One solid aftermarket option: the new Eye-Fi Geo memory card, which automatically geotags everything you shoot for eternity, for free—provided, that is, you’re using an Apple to upload your videos (or photos). I recently reveled in the beauty of the hand painted Carlos Falchi Floral Sling. And it was not just me who loved the bag, many of you did. But then a question popped up; “Will the paint run? Is the bag too delicate?”. I asked over at Carlos Falchi and they said to assure you all that no, the paint will not run as it is glazed over. And no, the bag is not too delicate to use, they use the stomach of the snake which is very resilient.

Now that we have covered that, there is a perfect option for those of you who loved the idea of the hand-painted floral pattern but prefer it in a smaller bag. The Carlos Falchi Flower Flat Clutch is also designed with hand-painted flowers and has an optional chain shoulder strap. Big as they are, there’s only so much you can fit in a Rolls-Royce. So the revered British marque has teamed up with renowned shipyard Palmer Johnson on what could be the ultimate globe-trotting mega yacht the world has seen yet.
With 82 meters (267 ft) fore to aft and six decks of living space, the PJ World Yacht packs all the features we listed above and then some. It’s even got an anti-piracy system – we’re talking about real pirates, not copying DVDs here – and an environmentally-friendly diesel-electric propulsion system. At the moment, this Ice Class cruiser – enabled by Palmer Johnson’s acquisition of Noway’s Flekkefjord & Slipp shipyard – is just a concept, but at this level, all it takes is one wealthy customer to turn the idea into reality. St Regis Monarch Beach

St. Regis Monarch Beach Turned Over To Citigroup

Last month I saw that the owners of the St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point, California had defaulted on a $70-million loan. The Orange County resort, infamous for being the site of the $443,000 AIG retreat after the federal bailout, was scheduled for a foreclosure auction. The auction didn’t take place and the resort was officially turned over to the lender of its $70 million mezzanine loan, Citigroup. The Wall Street Journal reports that deal took place after weeks of negotiations between Citigroup and the owners of the hotel, Farallon Capital Management LLC and Makar Properties LLC. A Citigroup spokesperson has said that the foreclosure acquisition will have no impact on the daily operations of the resort which will carry on as usual.

The St. Regis has a 400-room hotel, a golf course, a private beach club and several restaurants including Michael Mina’s Stonehill Tavern. The property is current on two other mortgages totaling $230 million and was refinanced in 2007 resulting in the $300 million in debt. The five-star hotel is located near Laguna Beach, California which is also home to Ritz-Carlton and Montage luxury resorts.

There’s an optional eight-inch LCD viewer for gazing upon your handiwork, or you can have stills processed and printed by Fuji’s special labs. (Pricing for that service is, as you’d expect, TBD.) If you get bored—or overstimulated—with the 3-D business, the camera can also shoot old-fashioned 2-D with different effects in each lens at the same time (one black-and-white landscape, say, and the other a high-saturation color close-up).
